Support Your Library

I have been so blessed to be supported by Indiana libraries! (Ok, I’ll admit it. I may have

emailed every single library in the state asking them to consider shelving my book and/or

hosting an event. But still!) In the next few weeks, in fact, I have a full-time job’s worth of

events at libraries – book clubs (my favorite!) author fairs, book signings, and speaking

engagements. For a full list and to see if I’m coming to a library near you, check out the Events

Page on my website!

In honor of the great love I’m feeling from local libraries, I wanted to share some ways to

support your local libraries because they are a gem to communities and need support like

anything else:

1. Get a library card. I think of myself as a pretty non-judgmental person, but I really have

to control my facial reaction (probably without much success) when people say: “I don’t

even have a library card.” No library card?! Unimaginable. It was the first errand I ran

when I moved to Plymouth, and I almost cried when I was told I couldn’t check out any

books on my first day. The librarian saw my distress and made an exception. (In my

defense, it was a stressful day, which is why I went straight to the library for solace. I

don’t always cry when I can’t get the book I want.)

2. Go to the library. This is a separate matter than having a library card, and it sounds

obvious. But again, I can’t tell you how many people say it’s been years since they’ve

stepped foot in their library. Libraries are a plethora of events – local artists (not just

writers), clubs, presentations, crafts, etc. In the next few weeks alone, my own public

library has some of the following happenings: Coffee Break Café where people can

gather for coffee and (non-book) conversation; Knitting/Crocheting club; ESL classes;

tutoring sessions; kiddo story time (obviously); and my personal favorite – Meg Hamand

presenting on her new book!

3. Use the library. Again, obvious, but, raise your hand if you’re paying for Audible or

Spotify premium to listen to audio books? As a starving artist, clearly, I’d love for you all

to purchase Diamonds in Auschwitz from Audible (or any other audio book service you

use), but did you know pretty much any book you’d like to listen to is FREE through your

library. You can download their digital services app and support the library with the

same action. And, of course, you should step foot into the library and check out books.

4. Donate to the library. This doesn’t have to be just books. When you’re stopping into the

library to get your card, borrow books, and attend the latest craft club (see steps 1 thru

3), you should ask what donations the library needs. Many libraries are community

service hubs and distribute needs like school supplies or hygiene products. You don’t

know if you don’t ask.

5. Share your library. Last, share information about your library. Follow their social media

accounts and share events. Talk up how cool your library is (ours has a new fireplace

and outdoor patio!). Or, maybe, write a blog about it!
